HALF THE PEOPLE WASHING ROBOTAXIS USED TO DRIVE FOR LYFT

In Nashville, 70 people were hired to keep 50 self-driving cars running. They work at a depot that belongs to Flexdrive, a company owned by Lyft. About half of them used to drive for Lyft. Now they wash and charge the cars that replaced them.

Flexdrive rents cars to drivers, and those cars come back every 14 to 16 weeks. Robotaxis, by contrast, need attention two or three times a day. Workers say they’re better off: they have colleagues, and one of them adds that the hours are fixed.

Human work has moved from the driver’s seat to a depot. The next candidate for that job is a humanoid robot.
