ON CHATGPT, AN AD CAN BE PICKED BASED ON WHAT WE CONFIDE IN IT
Anyone who has our email addresses and phone numbers can upload them to ChatGPT and show us ads inside the chat. The ad can also be picked based on what we write, because advertisers tell OpenAI which chat topics they want to appear in.
In a chat, we share embarrassing symptoms and what we owe the bank, things we’d never put on a form. If we turn off ad personalization in the settings, ChatGPT stops using our past chats to pick ads.
Whatever you’d keep off a form, keep out of the chat too, because even with that setting off, the chat you have open can still be used to pick ads.
