THEY’RE PAID $2 AN HOUR TO TEACH ROBOTS THEIR OWN JOBS
A medical student in Nigeria films himself folding laundry. Robot makers buy videos like his to teach machines our jobs. The student, Zeus, earns $15 an hour, which puts him among the best paid. In India, workers wear cameras on the job for a couple of dollars an hour.
These workers are teaching the machine a job it will probably do in their place. Scholar Rob Nixon calls this kind of harm slow violence: there’s no explosion and no visible culprit.
If you’re offered money to film yourself, first ask the company in writing who gets the videos. If they won’t tell you, walk away.
What do you think?
